Rolex GMT-Master II 16710

The GMT-Master II 16710 was Rolex's professional pilot's watch from 1989 to 2007 — direct descendant of the original 1955 GMT-Master developed for Pan Am intercontinental crews. Reference 16710 introduced the independently adjustable hour hand, allowing the wearer to track a second time zone without disturbing the local reading, and remains one of the last steel Rolex sports watches produced with an aluminium bezel insert.

The 40mm Oystersteel case carries the slim, unguarded-crown profile of the pre-Super Case era, paired with a bidirectional rotating bezel fitted with a black aluminium 24-hour insert. A sapphire crystal with Cyclops lens protects the dial, whilst the screw-down Triplock crown and Oyster case deliver water resistance to 100 metres.

The glossy black dial carries applied luminous hour markers, Mercedes-style hands and a red-tipped 24-hour hand that sweeps the bezel once every twenty-four hours. A date aperture at three o'clock is magnified by the Cyclops lens.

Calibre 3185 is Rolex's self-winding GMT movement, featuring a quickset date and independently adjustable hour hand — the defining functional upgrade over the original GMT-Master. Running at 28,800 vibrations per hour with 31 jewels, it delivers approximately forty-eight hours of power reserve and is COSC-certified as a Superlative Chronometer.

Presented on an Oystersteel Oyster bracelet with Oysterlock clasp and Fliplock extension — the classic three-link bracelet that has accompanied the GMT-Master since 1955.

Excellent condition from 2003 means minimal wear for a watch of this age — expect light surface marks on the case and bracelet, maintained in unusually sharp condition for a twenty-year-old Rolex sport watch. Supplied with its original box; manufacturer's papers are not present. The manufacturer's warranty has expired; this watch is covered by Pride and Pinion's comprehensive twelve-month warranty from the date of purchase.

The 16710 is the last aluminium-bezel GMT-Master II — a vintage-adjacent Rolex sport watch that captures the pre-Super Case, pre-Cerachrom character of the brand's most travelled model.
